New Fluorescence Filters We’ve expanded our selection of filter sets available for the VanGuard 1400FLi Series Fluorescence Microscopes to support more applications than ever.
Our new brochure highlights hundreds of common fluorophores and the recommended filter set for single dye applications.
The fluorescence filter sets are optimized to maximize emission collection and minimize optical degradation by using specialized optical polishing and anti-reflective coatings. Custom options are also available for multiple-dye applications.
Fluorescence is an excellent method of studying material that can be made to fluoresce with a UV light source. Molecules are treated with a fluorophore or multiple fluorophores causing them to emit light that is visible against a black background.
Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) Q. How hot can Bellwether crucibles be heated? A. Bellwether crucibles can withstand temperatures up to 1100°C. At the factory, our crucibles are fired at 1205°C and tested three times before passing quality control! During each testing cycle, crucibles are oven-heated to 1100°C, cooled to 400°C, then removed from the oven and further cooled to 20°C.
Q. What is a crucible? A. Crucibles are cup-shaped containers used to heat chemicals at extremely high temperatures. Crucibles must be able to tolerate high temperatures.
Q. Where can I purchase Bellwether crucibles? A. VEE GEE sells through an international network of dealers. Email sales@veegee.com or call (800) 423-8842 if you need help locating a dealer.

Stick It to Compost Using thermometers to regulate compost temperature
The speed and efficiency of composting partly depends on the temperature of the compost. Since bacteria break down biodegradable material faster at relatively hot temperatures, monitoring and controlling the core temperature of compost is important.
VEE GEE compost thermometers are available with 36”, 48”, and even 72” durable stainless steel stems to accommodate everything from backyard compost bins to commercial-sized piles. The 3” dial face is easy to read and is hermetically sealed to prevent water ingress and fogging. With a range of 0 to 200°F, VEE GEE compost thermometers are capable of measuring even hot thermophilic composting where higher temperatures are needed to break down materials like meat and dairy.
On a related note, the county in which VEE GEE resides recently expanded its recycling and composting program. Rather than toss organic “trash” into garbage cans, residents can recycle it for compost. According to King County’s website, “Vegetable and fruit trimmings, meats, fish and poultry scraps and bones, plate scrapings, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper towels and napkins–even greasy pizza delivery boxes—all can be recycled.”
