Dial (Bimetal) Thermometers

Dial (bimetal) thermometers are simple to use, robust in design, and reasonably accurate in low and mid-range temperatures. They don’t require any power and are used in many different applications such as food and beverage quality control, general lab use, asphalt/concrete testing, and soil and compost testing. Stem lengths range from 5” to 48” and they can be calibrated in the field. The bimetallic element inside a dial thermometer is constructed of two metal strips that are bonded together. The two strips are different metals that have different coefficients of thermal expansion. When the temperature changes, the two strips will...

Alcohol Hydrometers

VEE GEE Scientific carries a few different hydrometers for alcohol measurements. Before we get into the different types, one important point that applies to all hydrometers: Hydrometer measurements are temperature sensitive and each hydrometer will list the “Calibrated for use at temperature”, generally 60°F (15.6°C) or 68°F (20°C). If your liquid isn’t at the calibrated temperature, a correction factor needs to be applied. Some hydrometers, known as combined form, have a built-in thermometer to make this process easier. Let’s explore where each of these alcohol hydrometers is used. Tralle/Proof Hydrometers Used to verify the alcohol content in distilled spirits, these...

Tips and Frequently Asked Questions for VEE GEE Refractometers

CLEANING TIPS: - The glass prism and daylight plate must be gently cleaned after each use. Any residue left on the prism will affect the way the light refracts on the next sample. If your sample is oily or sticky a mild detergent that is diluted can be used, along with a microfiber or non-abrasive lint-free cloth. - Do not hold the refractometer under a stream of water from a faucet to rinse it off. The entire unit is not watertight, just the prism is sealed to the housing. This applies to our handheld and digital units. CALIBRATION TIPS: -...
